Small Town Melodies
Israel | 1995 |72 minutes | Hebrew | Documentary | English subtitles
In the mid-1990s, director Levi Zini set out to direct a film about the town of Sderot. At that time, before the Qassam rockets, the red alerts, and the change in demographic composition brought about by immigration from the USSR, Sderot was a vibrant area of cultural and musical flourishing, full of hope. Zini focuses on the viewpoint of the sons and daughters of the second generation of immigrants, young people seeking to realize their dreams within a complex relationship with their parents and with Israel as they experience it, and along the way he captures three local heroes who will become key figures in contemporary Israeli culture: the musician Haim Ulliel, the writer Shimon Adaf and the TV personality Miri Bohadana. From the distance of three decades, "This is the only way I can see" is a postcard from a different reality - naive, open and optimistic.
