On May 12, the Management addressed the Sapir Community:

Dear Students and Staff,

We hope that you and your loved ones are well, safe and secure.
All of us are experiencing challenging times, from the north of the country to the south and in particular the western Negev and Gaza Envelope communities.

Sapir has always been an open academic home that provides accessible and high-level college education to all segments of Israeli society. As an academic, cultural and socio-economic resource for the entire region, we believe in academic excellence out of solidarity, fraternity and true partnership. Even in these difficult days of violence and rocket fire, we remain committed to these objectives.

The country is celebrating the Eid al-Fitr and Shavuot holidays. Eid al-Fitr is a time of forgiveness, peace and goodwill – a time to give charity, visit with relatives and resolve disputes. The Book of Ruth, which is read on the Shavuot holiday, emphasizes the importance of openness of thought, greatness of heart and acceptance of the other.

In the spirit of these two special holidays, we long for the end of violence and for the return of the days of sanity, peace, security, good health, and prosperity.

All the best,

Tens of thousands of Israeli soldiers have seen combat in the Gaza Strip since last October, but not all of them leave the war behind when they come back home. Many suffer combat and operational stress, reactions that could lead to PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and even suicide. Now, cutting edge research by Dr. Leah Shelef, Dean of the School of Social Work at Sapir College, is seeking the most effective way to treat – and prevent – these dangerous outcomes.
While Israel considers how to revitalize the devastated communities of Hevel Tkuma / Gaza Envelope, Sapir Academic College has just taken the first step. Sapir, the academic nerve center of the entire Western Negev, will devote most of its NIS 200 million in government rehabilitation funding to scholarships, enabling more students from diverse backgrounds to study in the region. Its flagship initiative will be free tuition for all first-year students.
