Ran Tal's presence in Israel's documentary cinema is unique and impressive. In his expansive work, from award winning "Children of the Sun" and his latest film "1341 Frames of Love and War", Ran examines the Israeli narrative through its milestones.
Ran developed a unique cinematic language that centers on the complex rapport between documentation, archive and soundtrack. His cinematic manuscript separates sound from image in a manner that creates a "third space" between them which is subject to interpretation. The fragmentary dimension of his cinema and his lingering on the images deconstruct familiar stories while demanding of the viewer a proactive observation. His focus on locations or individuals who are the "core of Israeliness" shatters assumptions yet observes them with an attentive eye. The way in which he asks and listens to interviewees in his films and his ability to remain out of sight without renouncing the observation and the attention, provide for a new and complex examination – one that is not seduced by the big stories on the one hand and decomposition on the other, yet doesn't relinquish the critical observation and voice.
